WHO Publication: WHO consolidated guidelines on tuberculosis: module 4: treatment and care, 2nd edition

WHO’s Department for HIV, Tuberculosis, Hepatitis and Sexually Transmitted Infections maintains all current recommendations on tuberculosis (TB) treatment and care in a unified set of consolidated guidelines, organized into modules covering specific programmatic areas. Module 4: treatment and care encompasses recommendations for the treatment of drug-susceptible and drug-resistant TB and for patient care and support. This second edition consolidates recommendations on TB management in children and adolescents and incorporates new and updated recommendations for drug-resistant TB treatment, including shorter treatment regimens for pre-extensively drug-resistant TB according to disease severity and a new recommendation on palliative care for people with multidrug- or rifampicin-resistant TB. Developed according to WHO standards using current evidence reviews and the GRADE approach, the guidelines are primarily intended for health policy-makers and national TB programme managers, while also supporting health professionals, technical agencies and other organizations involved in TB treatment and care.

WHO Publication: WHO consolidated guidelines on tuberculosis: module 6: tuberculosis and comorbidities, 2nd ed.

Addressing TB comorbidities and risk factors is central to the World Health Organization (WHO) End TB Strategy. These guidelines consolidate the latest WHO recommendations on TB and key comorbidities. The guidelines are a living document and will include dedicated sections for each key TB comorbidity or health-related risk factor. The first edition focused on HIV-associated TB, updating the WHO policy on collaborative TB/HIV activities. This second edition expands on the previous edition and consolidates new and existing recommendations on interventions to address undernutrition in people with TB, to provide food assistance to households of people with TB in food-insecure settings, and to screen for TB among those who are undernourished or food insecure.

WHO Publication: WHO operational handbook on tuberculosis: module 3: diagnosis

The “WHO operational handbook on tuberculosis. Module 3: diagnosis” provides an implementation guidance on detection of TB infection, disease and drug resistance within a single reference document. It also provides updates to the diagnostic algorithms, in view of new recommendations on concurrent testing of respiratory and non-respiratory samples among adults and adolescents with HIV, children with HIV, and children without HIV or with unknown HIV status. Finally, it summarizes updates on diagnostic accuracy of the WHO recommended technologies, in view of the WHO TB Diagnostic guidelines updates as well as analysis of discordant results. This document accompanies the “WHO consolidated guidelines on tuberculosis. Module 3: diagnosis”, which summarizes and updates the latest WHO recommendations on the detection of TB infection, disease, and drug resistance for Member States, technical partners, and other stakeholders.

WHO updated recommendations on HIV clinical management: recommendations for a public health approach

This document provides an overview of the updated World Health Organization recommendations for HIV clinical management, which focus on optimizing antiretroviral therapy, preventing vertical transmission, and enhancing tuberculosis prevention among individuals with HIV. These updates are intended to support global initiatives aimed at ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030. Key changes include the introduction of new antiretroviral drugs and regimens, revised postnatal prophylaxis and breastfeeding guidelines for managing infants at risk of vertical transmission, and the endorsement of shorter tuberculosis preventive treatments to improve efficacy and adherence. The recommendations are designed to simplify and advance HIV care, promote equity, and contribute to improved health outcomes and quality of life for individuals living with HIV. The updated guidance will be incorporated into the forthcoming revision of the antiretroviral therapy chapter within the Consolidated Guidelines on HIV Prevention, Testing, Treatment, Service Delivery, and Monitoring: Recommendations for a Public Health Approach.

WHO, GAVI, and Government of South Africa: Catalyzing solutions for equitable global access and sustainable financing for novel tuberculosis vaccines for adults and adolescents

This report was developed by the WHO TB Vaccine Accelerator Finance and Access working group, co-led by WHO, Gavi and the Government of South Africa. It sets out the working group’s shared vision for equitable access to novel TB vaccines and will advance a shared understanding of the current landscape and its possible evolution in the future. It identifies six urgently needed solutions to accelerate access and financing and highlights the roles of different stakeholders to support the implementation of these solutions.

WHO: Counselling of individuals at risk of tuberculosis (self-paced course)

Individuals at risk of TB face barriers to timely diagnosis and treatment, including a lack of awareness, fear of stigma, and limited knowledge of where to access care. In EECA countries, TB services are free, so cost should not prevent care-seeking. Counseling aims to equip at-risk individuals with essential information about TB symptoms, transmission, diagnosis, treatment, and available care options. Each course/module contains short (up to 10 minutes) video presentations from a speaker of the relevant course/module, the main presentation, and reading materials (glossary, lecture, and list of useful resources).

WHO: Frequently Asked Questions to support implementation of WHO recommendations on near point-of-care testing, tongue swab-based testing, and sputum pooling strategies for TB diagnosis

In 2026, WHO released new policy recommendations on the new class of NPOC-NAATs, use of tongue swabs as a new sample type to diagnose TB among people that cannot produce sputum (cough up mucus from the lungs), and spooling of sputum samples from multiple patients as a new strategy to diagnose TB that can provide clients with faster results and save programme costs during times of increased financial constraints. The Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) below are the most common that WHO has received since the new recommendations were published. FAQ responses aim to improve shared understanding of the new policy guidance.

WHO: Guidance on evidence generation on new regimens for tuberculosis preventive treatment

The global burden of tuberculosis infection and the need to prevent progression to active disease highlight the importance of generating robust and policy-relevant evidence for tuberculosis preventive treatment (TPT). This guidance presents a structured framework to support the generation of high-quality evidence on new TPT regimens, addressing persistent limitations in available data, including low certainty of evidence, incomplete reporting and insufficient consideration of key decision-making criteria.

WHO: Health education and counseling of people with tuberculosis (self-paced course)

The global goal of reducing TB burden is achieved by curing people through effective treatment. Health education and counseling are essential in this process, helping people with TB understand risk factors, avoid harmful habits, and adopt self-care practices. Many people lack clear, evidence-based information about their diagnosis, treatment process, and recovery‚ leaving room for myths and fear. This course equips learners to provide accurate TB education, address stigma and human rights concerns, and tailor messages to diverse needs, ultimately improving treatment adherence and outcomes. Each course/module contains short (up to 10 minutes) video presentations from a speaker of the relevant course/module, the main presentation, and reading materials (glossary, lecture, and list of useful resources).
